The Furies

Page One

Panel 1
Close up of Faith (Dante's) face. Her eyes are rolling back up into her head, as if she is struggling to keep from losing consciousness.

Faith (in caption)
I'm not sure exactly what happened next.

Panel 2
Close up of Faith's face. Her eyes begin to close as the water rushes past her face.

Faith (in caption)
I remember the sea monster began to dive. I felt the water rushing past my face.

Panel 3
Close up of Faith's face. Her eyes are closed, her face rippling as if distorted by the pressure of the water rushing past her.

Faith (in caption)
My ears began to pop and then ...

Panel 4
Total black panel.

Faith (in caption)
... everything went black.

Pages Two and Three
Double page spread

Panel 1
(small inset panel)
Close up of Faith as she opens her eyes slowly.

Faith (in caption)
And when I finally came to again ...

Panel 2
(small inset panel)
Close up. Dante's eyes bug out in surprise at what she sees.

Faith (in caption)
... I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Panel 3
Principal panel of the double spread. Medium long shot. All characters are full body. Dante and the rest of the Furies are at the very base of a great mountain on the ocean floor. (Please note: They are now the FURIES and are no longer in their normal human forms. Dante has flame coming from her eyes and hands, Epiphany is in her metallic form, and Silhouette is in her more feral form. This is essential ... without their Furies powers they are normal humans and would be unable to breath underwater, much less withstand the crushing pressures of the deep ocean.) In the distance the city of Poseidonis can be clearly seen protruding from the ocean floor. The city is a massive collection of spires and domes, at once both futuristic and a relic from an age than never was. Standing firmly between the Furies and the great city (and blocking any escape route) is Poseidon, as well the kraken (the sea monster from Part One).

Poseidon
Awake, Furies! It is time for you to pledge your allegiance to me in the great war to come!!

Page Four

Panel 1
Medium shot. Silhouette steps forward, past the other Furies, and faces Poseidon. She speaks angrily.

Silhouette
I don't care who you are. I'm not bowing at the feet of anyone ... and neither are any of the Furies!

Panel 2
Medium close up. Poseidon's eyes glow with rage.

Poseidon
I am Poseidon! You will not speak to me with such impudence!

Panel 3
Medium shot. Poseidon whips his arms towards Silhouette and a shockwave pulses from his hands, arcing through the water, and flows into Silhouette knocking her backwards and slamming her against the rocky backdrop of the mountains.

Poseidon
Is that understood?

Panel 4
Medium shot. As if sensing their impending movements, Poseidon spins towards Dante and Epiphany.

Poseidon
You'd do well to learn from her experience.

Panel 5
Medium close up. Dante looks intently at Poseidon. Her eyes glow with fire.

Dante
What do you want from us?

Page Five

Panel 1
Medium close up. Poseidon pauses, strokes the his long beard. This should be something of an odd transition, as if Poseidon suddenly did a "personality flop" ... going from a murderous rage to detached curiosity in the blink of an eye. (This should be our first hint that Poseidon is NOT what he seems to be.)

Poseidon
A reasonable question. We will forego the obeisance ... for now. But understand, Furies ... you are now and forever will be my subjects, whether you realize it or not. Whether you accept it or not!

Panel 2
Medium long shot. A disheveled and bruised Silhouette gets to her feet and joins her fellow Furies.

Silhouette
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just tell us what the fuck you want before we get as old as you.

Panel 3
Medium close up. Poseidon simmers, grinding his teeth. ("Personality flip-flop" again.) He barely manages to hold his rage in check.

Poseidon
My brother is returning ... soon.

Panel 4
Medium shot. Poseidon gestures wildly, almost as if out of control.

Poseidon
Do you not understand? ZEUS is coming back to Earth! His plan has almost reached fruition! He is coming back to complete his sinister plot!

Panel 5
Medium close up. Dante looks at him quizzically.

Dante
And exactly what would that sinister plot be? And how does it effect us?

Page Six

Panel 1
Medium long shot. Wide angle. Half page panel (?). Poseidon roars with rage. He whips his arms above his head sending giant spouts of water of pressurized water high above his head.

Poseidon
Do you understand ANYTHING? Do you know nothing of your purpose of existence?

Panel 2
Medium close up. Epiphany explains.

Epiphany
We're to seek justice, avenge and punish what wrongs we can. That's our purpose. That's why we were given these abilities.

Panel 3
Medium close up. Poseidon laughs, almost maniacally.

Poseidon
But do you know who gave you your abilities? Why you were given them? Do you?

Panel 4
Medium shot. All three Furies in frame.

Dante
We were given them by the previous Furies. The powers are passed on from one generation to the next.

Page Seven

Panel 1
Medium close up. Poseidon shakes his head. "Personality flip-flop" here. The rage has suddenly disappeared and been replaced by an earnest, pleading face.

Poseidon
That's what you were told. What you were led to believe. The truth ... the truth is that I gave them to you! I gave you your power so that you may fight Zeus! His plot is the ultimate injustice! Nothing else compares!

Panel 2
Medium long shot. All three Furies in panel. All three look at him incredulously.

Silhouette
YOU ...

Epiphany
...gave us ...

Dante
... our powers?

Panel 3
Medium shot. Poseidon gestures wildly, uncontrollably again. "Personality flip-flop". The rage has returned.

Poseidon
Did it never occur to you that the powers you wield must have a source? That at some point the Furies were C REATED and that they have been sustained throughout the centuries for a purpose?

Panel 4
Medium shot. Dante addresses Poseidon.

Dante
If that's true, then tell us why. Fill us in a little. What is this plot you keep talking about and how exactly does it affect us?

Poseidon
You could not comprehend it! No mortal can!

Page Eight

Panel 1
Medium shot. Poseidon continues his gesticulating. He is almost rabid in his movements.

Poseidon
That was what Zeus counted on! His plan was so complex as to be beyond the comprehension of the mortal mind! That's why he murdered the Pantheon! Slaughtered his children! His subjects and allies! They could comprehend! They might try to stop him ... but not if he got to them first!

Panel 2
Medium close up. Poseidon's rabid movements have slowed. He seems almost introspective now, as if the Furies are the farthest thing from his mind. He is speaking more to himself now, almost in soliloquy.

Poseidon
I knew of his plan, as did our brother Hades! But Hades cooperation was easily bought and paid for! And then there was Poseidon ... poor weak Poseidon ... whom Zeus never even considered a threat! Poseidon was not even worthy of consideration! Poseidon is too soft. Too weak. Too content in his underwater world.

Panel 3
Medium shot. Poseidon clenches his fists, looks upward, and screams as he gestures wildly.

Poseidon
But I will be the one to stop you! I'll shove that lightning bolt up your ass!!

Panel 4
Medium close up. Poseidon turns quickly and looks at the Furies, as if suddenly remembering that they are there.

Poseidon
You will use the powers I have given you. You will ally yourselves with me! You will come to Poseidonis! You will begin your training, the long preparation ... and together we will defeat him! First we must drain the oceans ... we'll take all the water and put it in

Page Nine

Panel 1
Medium long shot. Silhouette steps forward and addresses the other Furies.

Silhouette
"Drain the ocean?" This is bullshit! This guy's a fuckin' lunatic!

Panel 2
Medium shot. Poseidon turns to Silhouette, having heard what she said.

Poseidon
What did you say?

Silhouette
I said you're crazier than a shithouse rat.

Panel 3
Medium close up. Poseidon shakes with rage.

Poseidon
You will obey me! You will play the part that has been ordained for you to play!

Panel 4
Medium shot. All three Furies in panel.

Dante
And if we decide we don't want to play?

Panel 5
Medium shot. Poseidon has clearly lost control. He is in fact what Silhouette accused him of being ... a lunatic. He grabs his great beard with both hands, tugging at it in frustration. He trembles with rage.

Poseidon
You were given your abilities for a reason! If you refuse to use them for that purpose ...

Panel 6
Poseidon points his hands at them. His fingers gnarled and trembling.

Poseidon
... they can easily be taken away!

Page Ten

Panel 1
Medium long shot. Wide Angle. Large Panel. All three Furies in panel. Full body. The Furies have been suddenly transformed. Their swimsuits have disappeared. From the waist up they appear to be their normal (non-Fury) selves, but from the waist down their bodies have been replaced by long, slender, fish- like torsos. They are now mermaids.

Dante (now Faith again)
What the hell?

Panel 2
Medium close up. Faith tries to focus, to power up, but her flame will not appear.

Faith
I can't power up!

Panel 3
Medium shot. Epiphany (now Amy) is likewise unable to recall her metallic form. Silhouette (Sara) is now looking less animalistic ... more like her normal self -- at least from the waist up.

Amy
Neither can I.

Sara
None of us can. He may be totally fucked in the head, but if he can take our powers away and do ... this .. to us, maybe he was telling the truth about being the one who gave us our powers in the first place.

Panel 4
Medium shot. Faith looks to her teammates for advice.

Faith
He's too powerful. If he can do THIS to us, we can't fight him.

Amy
So what do we do then? Promise him allegiance and hope that he gives us back our bodies if not our powers?

Page Eleven

Panel 1
Medium long shot. Poseidon has somewhat regained his composure. "Personality flip-flop". As if by transforming the Furies and demonstrating his power, he has regained control of the situation.

Poseidon
It's your choice! Serve me as my champions or serve me as my slaves. But you will serve me!

Off panel Voice
Father! What have you done?

Panel 2
Medium long shot, large panel. Standing behind Poseidon is his son, Prince Triton. Triton has all the regal bearing of his father, though he appears to be much younger. He is tall and proud, handsome and muscular. (NOTE: Triton is our version of Aquaman/Submariner ... so make him look the part. Strong, charismatic, ... very king-like. I'll e-mail you a jpg of his costume design in a day or so.) Standing (actually floating) next to Triton are several servant mermen. On seeing his son, Poseidon suddenly seems transformed. Not a "personality flop" this time, but something more profound. He still looks the same, though now he is somehow lessened. Smaller, weaker, more frail ... older.

Triton
Change them back, this instant!

Poseidon (rambling)
But I ... they are ... they must ...

Triton
Give them back their proper forms, Father.

Panel 3
Medium close up. Poseidon relents. He weakly waves his hand in the Furies' direction. It is a similar gesture to the one that transformed them into mermaids, though this time the gesture, like Poseidon, seems smaller.

Panel 4
The Furies are once again transformed, this time back to their "Fury" forms.

Page Twelve

Panel 1
Medium shot. Triton gestures to the mermen.

Triton
Attend him. Take him home. See that he receives his treatments.

Panel 2
Medium shot. The mermen take possession of Poseidon, escorting him away. Poseidon turns back weakly, continuing his protests.

Poseidon
... the oceans will burn and the sky will rain blood ... everyone will die ... he IS coming back ... he is ...
Panel 3
Medium close up. Triton turns to the Furies.

Triton
I am Triton. Prince and ruler of Poseidonis. I must apologize for my father. He is ... infirm ... and managed to escape our care. I will return you to your ship.

Faith
Not so fast. I think we deserve some answers here.

Panel 4
Medium close up. Triton nods.

Triton
You must understand ... My father was a great king. He was once the gentlest of monarchs. If Olympus had been ruled as Poseidon ruled the seas the enmity between gods and man would surely never have reached the levels it did. But in recent years he has increasingly lost control of his mental ... faculties. I was forced to assume the throne and to have my father committed to the care of physicians.

Panel 5
Medium close up. Triton struggles for words.

Triton
Lately, he has become obsessed with his brother Zeus. It's a long and tiresome story. I beg you do not think ill of him. He would never have behaved this way before ... before ... (Triton struggles for words) ... Come, I will see you safely back to your ship. We will bother you no more.

Faith (in caption)
And with that we were on our way back to the cruise ship, back to normal as if nothing at all had happened. But I couldn't shake the feeling that there was somehow something more to all of this. Something that would come back to haunt us all.

Page Twelve cont.

Panel 6
Long shot. Poseidon, once again out of control, and seeming very small and pathetic, is dragged away by the mermen.

Poseidon (mumbling)
... zeus is coming ... zeus is coming ... zeus is coming ...
